Wouter Knecht, Head of Commercial Development, Transamerica Life Bermuda
For Dutch students or business professionals eyeing an international career, the move to Asia can feel like a giant leap.  Wouter Knecht has not only made that leap, he has spent the last seven years navigating the complexities of Hong Kong and translating his Dutch roots into a successful regional career.

Since 2019, Wouter has been based in Hong Kong, where he currently serves as the Head of Commercial Development for Transamerica Life Bermuda (since May 2025).  In this role, he drives global strategy and growth initiatives for a high-net-worth insurer with a footprint spanning Hong Kong, Singapore, Bermuda, and Dubai International Financial Center.  It is a role that demands a global mindset, but it is a career he built from a distinctly Dutch foundation.

Before relocating to Asia, Wouter spent nearly a decade at Transamerica Life Bermuda's parent company, Aegon, an international financial services group and a name familiar to anyone in the Dutch financial sector.  He started his career at Aegon's global head office in the Netherlands, working on strategy, risk and capital management across mature markets like the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.  This experience gave him a deep understanding of how large financial institutions operate at the highest level, but it was his move to Hong Kong in 2019 that truly transformed his career.

In Hong Kong, Wouter shifted from the "behind-the-scenes" world of risk and capital management to the front lines of business development.  He has since driven strategy, transformation and M&A projects across Asia (including extensive on-the-ground experience in Mainland China) and even in other international growth markets like Brazil.  His story is a testament to how Hong Kong can act not only as a regional launchpad, but as a strong basis for a global career as well.

Crucially, Wouter has the ability to bridge different worlds.  He holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Econometrics & Quantitative Finance and a Master of Law (LLM) in Financial Law from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and obtained the Certified European Financial Analyst (CEFA) designation after completing the post-graduate Investment Management program of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.  This blend of quantitative rigor and legal expertise, combined with an open and curious mindset, is what gives him an excellent starting point to effectively navigate the differences between the western and Asian markets.
